About Debra Wolf
First reports "She was always a bit unusual," says childhood friend, Sharon S., an executive in San Francisco. "We grew up in the same small town just outside of Boston. We went to high school together, and were classmates in college. She was a hybrid. You know - creative, but logical. Addicted to word games. I knew her family, too. They were... different." When asked to elaborate, Ms. S. continues: "They talked about Michelangelo and Matisse. They played scrabble incessantly and read dictionaries for fun. Let's face it. That's just not normal." Expanding horizons - Debra Wolf's Early Resumé Eager to explore different ways to experience the world around her, Debra began traveling abroad at fifteen. She lived en famille in a small town in Normandy, immersed for a summer in French language and lifestyle. At sixteen, she camped through Eastern Europe with a group of students. They stood in line for bowls of cabbage soup, bathed in the public banyas of Moscow and Kiev, and breathed in the beauty of the Russian steppe. In college, Debra pursued her passion for language by continuing her focus on French and Russian, as well as studying International Public Law for a year, in Paris, at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, known as "Sciences Po." Debra took a variety of jobs after Wellesley, enjoying new accomplishments in each, and learning along the way. She worked for EDS in Dallas, and got her first taste of the systems world. She tried her hand at the insurance biz in Philadelphia. She interned in magazine publishing on Madison Avenue. Then she tackled business school, at Wharton. She studied Marketing and Business Law, and then plunged into corporate life. The "real" world Debra was a Business Analyst, Product Manager, and Start-up Manager for new teams as well as new lines of business. She designed Human Resource systems for multinational employers, including Dun & Bradstreet Software's SmartStream, IBM's French-based HR Access, and ADP Enterprise HRMS. She was responsible for Marketing, Planning, Quality Assurance, and Product Communications. She took complex regulatory concepts and translated them for technical teams to program, and for clients to understand. She brainstormed, collaborated, strategized, and managed, crafted and responded to RFPs in two languages. With one foot in the U.S., and one foot in Europe, she straddled and stretched; she sought best practices on both sides of the ocean, to build them into products, services, and marketing message. More of the journey Whatever her official job title, Debra Wolf's resuméwas quickly reflecting responsibility for words - using them to capture the interest of prospects, to educate customers, to assist the sales effort, and to provide advantage for her employers, clients, and colleagues. In fact, she produced hundreds of written deliverables:
While she found management satisfying, what delighted her most was the way smart marketing and the right words could solve problems, create opportunities, and grow ongoing relationships. The art of words After 20 years in the corporate world, Debra had honed her skills, conceiving and writing a broad range of materials for a variety of audiences. Along the way, she had begun assisting entrepreneurs and artists with their web sites and press kits. By 2003, Debra's desire for something different began to take form. She wanted hands-on involvement in communications and promotion, from strategy to successful execution. She wanted to broaden the reach of entrepreneurs and start-ups, partnerships and non-profits, as well as other "creatives" - opening doors through the art of words. New ventures were about to expand Debra Wolf's resumé. Making it happen Debra struck out on her own. One opportunity led to another, and short assignments grew into ongoing working relationships. She partnered with talented freelancers and other entrepreneurs for high quality services she could deliver to her clients - graphics, web services and more. Soon Debra was making it as an independent marketing consultant and professional writer. She was helping start-ups succeed, writing content for web sites, and crafting copy for creative businesses. She was facilitating research and analysis, turning that into SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and effective web presence. She was helping to brand, sell, retain; to promote, train, and educate. And happy to have found a place for all her skills - words, pictures and a knack for solving problems, she took a moment to celebrate, with a great cup of coffee. |
